I have a mare here who probably would do just that, if she was starving.
She has been through some pretty meager periods in her life, from what I
gather, and came here about 200# underweight, so likely having to fight for
her feed all her life has exacerbated her aggressiveness.
I have also likewise done a post mortem on a really nice APHA foal who must
have gotten caught in a crossfire between two broodmares, as he had the very
same lesions that Quentin described--two hoof-shaped bruises on the inside
of his abdominal wall and basically bled out into his abdomen....

Wow, you must not have the quality of hay in your round bales that we do
here. My biggest problem is not running over horses with the machinery,
putting them in the pasture, as they are all eager to get started.
