"Surface factors" has been the label for such things ever since we had
standardized BC forms.  Nothing new.  I'd suspect the BoD only stayed up
late enough for somebody to lay hands on the terminology already in use by
the vets.  I'd imagine they are called that because not all of them are in
fleshy areas, and not all of them are wounds.
