Re: [RC] [Guest] PIGS&HORSES - Barbara McCrary
When my husband and I rode in the European Championship (Austria - 1985), we
leased two horses from a prominent German rider. His family's business was
a butcher shop. His horses were the ones he selected out of the bunch that
came through to be slaughtered, the few that he thought might be good at
endurance. We went into that 100 race on two horses with extremely worn
shoes. When we suggested that the horses should be re-shod for the race, he
grumbled and simply put in new nails. About half-way through the race, the
rear halves of the shoes were worn off completely. My horse was re-shod at
a vet check, it was too late for Lud's mare. She finished the ride looking
OK, but the next morning she was dead lame with abscessed heels. And he was
required to ride the poor mare in the arena to show the next morning. He
was so embarrassed, but they required everyone who had ridden to circle the
arena a couple of times in front of a big audience.
I dearly love horses, but it is particularly Americans who are so
sympathetic to horses that we couldn't bear the thought of eating them.
Some people in the rest of the world would be glad to have ANYTHING to eat,
horses, dogs, cats, rats, bugs, whatever. It is only the well off and well
fed who can afford to criticize others for eating horses. I'm glad I don't
have to look at our horses and think of steaks and roasts, but if I were
poor and starving, things would be different. (Of course, if that were the
case, I wouldn't be able to have horses at all.)
