We always shave for scratches, that and the betadine washing. He hasn't had any problems. The cure is really prevention. This stuff grows in their thick winter coat from the heavy dew/frost out there right now. Next year shave the legs! It really works. This horse also has a severely low immune system for skin and mucus membranes as shown by a blood test my vet did on him. He also get eye infections from flys if I don't mask him all the time. Prevention is the key for us. I picked and scraped for 2 years and the light went on for me with the shaving idea.
