Re: [RC] tornados hit horse barn - Deanna German

OK, I've got a little more information to add to what I posted yesterday.

They are sorting through the wreckage trying to salvage what they can. This
will take some time, so rebuilding is not likely to start anytime soon.
There's talk of simply burning what's left once it's been sorted through and
starting from the foundations. This wasn't a swanky place to begin with --
it was a humble but adequate barn, pasture and house.

The 8 remaining horses (out of the 10 that were there -- 2 died) are being
stabled nearby. Before the tornado destroyed their home, these horses had
access to pastures with run-ins into their stalls; the pasture area was
divided so that congenial groups of 4, 4 and 2 could be together. Now they
are mostly stabled in stalls with an indoor arena serving as turnout for a
few hours a day. As we all can imagine, this is a huge transition for them.
It also looks like the 8 horses will need to be moved multiple times -- each
temporary home will only last a couple or a few weeks. No doubt, this is all
still very generous on the part of those providing the temporary housing and
    they are to be commended!

3 of the 8 are elderly horses and have some special requirements for
supplements. All would benefit from being able to be kept on the same feed
and hay as what they are accustomed to to smooth the transitions they face.
Pro-biotic supplements would further ease the transition. These things were
all lost. They already face vet bills related to the tornado because of
lacerations and such. Let's help them avoid calling the vet for colic.

Beyond the special supplements for the older horses, the feed and the
pro-biotic products, their wish list includes wheelbarrows, halters, lead
ropes, plastic flat-backed buckets, stainless steel feeders, muck rakes,
pitch forks, shovels, trash cans, redmond salt, dog food, cat food.... on
down to the things that we've all collected over the years like hoof picks,
brushes, salves (like Corona), vet wrap. Having a place to put some of these
things is obviously a problem, so my thought is that maybe a money donation
is more appropriate, then they can go buy what they need when they have
    somewhere to put it.

A post office box has been created for donations. It is:
      Serendipity Stables
      c/o Michele Davis
      P.O. Box 652
      Marysville, OH 43040

The woman I've been talking to, Tina Davidson, who boards her horse there,
said to make sure everyone knows that all $$ received will go directly to
the horses and horse care items or barn reconstruction and barn items.

This is a real opportunity to help a fellow horseperson. Do what you can.

    Deanna
