    Green horses tend to lunge uphill at a canter, because it takes fitter hindquarters to trot uphill.  And Leonard is correct that in that circumstance, the canter uphill is extremely wasteful of energy.  That said, given a fit horse, he really should be able to do both with ease, so that you can call the shots at the bottom, based on steepness, length of the hill, etc.

    Personnaly, I won't allow my horse to canter uphill, but prefer a gentle slow trot with the head on the ground or even a walk. Question of energy sparing.
