Heaters that burn with an open flame give off carbon monoxide and consume oxygen. A carbon monoxide detector should catch the CO, but they are still not recommended in small areas like campers, & you would also need to have a fresh air opening.
Catalytic heaters do not burn with an open flame and WORKING PROPERLY will not give off carbon monoxide. A CO detector should still be used with these in case the catalyst pad is damaged. These heaters DO consume oxygen, so you need to have a partially open window for safety. The heaters manual will tell you how many sq inches of opening are necessary for that size of heater.
The gas leak detectors are useful in case of gas leaks, but the danger is accidental combustion, and they don't catch the CO. (although there may be dual detectors made that do both.)
The safest is electic heat, but it isn't practical off any type of battery set-up because they draw 900-1500 watts. You need to be plugged in or running a generator. The little honda 1000 watt super quiet one would run a small heater on low. Your cold neighbor might kill you though.
The key is really not to have a totally closed environment, no matter what type of heat you use.

Would someone who understands the idiosyncracies of fatal gasses please explain what types of heat are safe in closed environments and do those alarms that are for gas leaks in your home work for the unsafe ones?
