We keep our horses out all year here in Wisconsin. We do not blanket at
all. We do condition in the cold. We put a rump rug (butt blanket or
quarter sheet) on the horse, warm up relatively slowly, cool down for a mile
or so at a walk and turn the still wet but cool horse out. We have never
seen a problem with this.
I think part of the reason is that we turn them out not allow them to stand
around in a stall and get stiff.
