Let me add to Laurie's post that the bales we get are baled with a plastic layer over them. On top of that, a GOOD round bale is baled TIGHT. This keeps excess moisture out of the center of the bale. As has already been mentioned, horses waste more of the round bale than they eat. MY horses generally don't eat nasty-smelling stuff and can smell dead things if they are in their hay when I can't smell a thing. I don't question why they aren't eating the bale; I just use it for a jump standard and put in the next bale.
OK is horse and cattle country. I buy my round bales from a horseman and my square bales from an Amish man. I don't worry about the rest; I ride instead.
