My sister just described something occurring with her Arab gelding that I'm hoping some ridecampers have experience with. The horse is completely stiff all over his back and hind end. She describes him as walking like a stork. It has gone on for several days and she says this morning his lower legs are swollen and he doesn't seem to want to put weight forward on his toes. Her veterinarian thought it was from the cold weather (shivering) and frozen ground... they live in northern Ontario Canada. The veterinarian also felt that the problem was in his hind feet, although the symptoms are also muscular and in his back. She has been blanketing him and giving massages to relieve him. This is not from riding as he has not been worked much lately. The horse is eating and drinking normally, and WNV was not suspected by her vet.
Can anyone help? Can cold weather cause something like a tie-up; or worse?
thanks
Brenda
