[RC] Riding Young - Nancy Zehetner

Ridecampers,  First, what I find of value on ride camp is the wisdom I've gained on where to park on future rides, where to find good advice, where to find the best stories and jokes, where to find solace, whose trailer hosts the best party and where to find the advil or...  I don't know where the cute single guys are, but seeing Trevor in that riding getup that Howard shared, I no longer want to know.  I wish that I was as good of a rider as I was as a child. Most children are naturals. I did not get my first horse until I was 10, but believe you me that I could stick on a horse then, bucking, rearing 180's or whatever.  I did not even own a saddle for a couple of years with my second horse and my girlfriends and I would race everywhere and jump anything.  I remember setting up a jump and at the last  minute my 14+ hand horse balked, slid and ducked under the bar.  I was left temporarily holding the bar.  Alas, I don't have the flexiblity and flow of movement that I possessed th en. Sometimes I forget to put my intentions on where I am going. I was always with my horse when I was young. My bones are not so forgiving now either.  Number one way for young children to die is motor vehicle accidents so if you truly want to keep them safe, keep them in your closet. LOL  I am a school nurse, by the way. I hear some valid points in the opposing argument.  I have not seen a  childhood study which compares the chances of injury when riding compared to other sports. I do know bikes and playgrounds are frequent sources of accidents, but i don't think we should keep our children off of slides and bikes. I also think I was a much better rider as a child. But I am not giving up riding.  Remember, balance in life as well as on your horse partner.   Nancy Z
