Re: [RC] Fw: West Nile Virus - superpat
The frist thing I think when a horse shows no interest in food but seems
otherwise ok is mild colic. I had exactly the same thing happen several
weeks ago. Temp was normal, pulse was 38, capillary refill good.....
A good sign was that there were gut sounds, although not very active. I
enlisted a friend to help give tummy lifts using a folded towel and as we
worked our way toward the back, you could actually hear what sounded like
burps. We worked with this for about 15 minutes and (although my vet has
since cautioned me about administering Banamine without knowing more about
the symptons) I administered Banamine paste and about 20 minutes later, she
began to show an interest in apples and nibbled at some wet beet pulp.
Two days later, my neighbors, new to horse ownership, called me to come look
at their horse who was exhibiting the very same symptoms. We followed the
same protocol while checking with the vet and their horse also seemed to
come around. Thenext day the vet came to check him and thought it may have
been a mild ccase of colic.
He lectured me on the dangers of administering Banamine with just the
symptoms I described because the reief it offers sometimes can mask more
serious concerns.
But the belly lifts seemed to really help. I had read about this in some
articles written by Linda Tellinghton Jones.
Hope your horse has only a mild case of something and not WNV.
