    [RC] Lost of a friend - sandy . l . holder

Let's show some support and care for the people who have lost their best
friends. Leave the criticism for the face in the mirror.

    Brenda Kossowan

I took my horse to Davis (CA) to get checked out after he'd slipped and went down, just to make sure he was ok. . .he was . . . but when we were finished, I noticed an older lady sitting on a bench next to her husband, crying her eyes out. . . since she was with her husband, I walked on to the bathroom.  As I was coming out, she walked in looking like she'd just lost her best friend.  Making polite conversation, I found out she'd just had to put down her 20 yr. old trusty steed.  I asked her if she needed a hug 'cause she sure looked like it, and she hugged me tight and cried on my shoulder for a few moments.  When she was done, I asked her if she had some great memories of him. . . she had a couple of special ones and shared them. . . seeming to realize that although her heart was breaking, they'd had some real fun times.  She stepped away and thanked me and moved on to dry her eyes.

Now I didn't know this lady but I'll tell you what, when the time comes, for whatever reason, that my big boy passes on, I sure hope to have someone give me a hug. . . and gently remind me to think of the really great times I have with him.  I know, no matter how it happens, that the loss will be terrible. . . very few horses just die in their sleep, and you never know from one day to the next when it will happen to you.  As Brenda mentioned, think about how you might be walking in the same shoes one of these days before you condemn someone that is going through a really tough time.  I'll go back to lurking now. . . .
