I, too, am having trouble with this family thing. For me, it's the key to AERC survival; without families we might as well join FEI and hire a nanny to take care of the kids while we're overseas competing. It's not that I don't trust you guys, John, I have yet to meet a Board member that I don't appreciate. The thing is, I would prefer the family thing to remain under the protection of the membership and not the Board. I don't see this as a knee jerk reaction at all. Susan Kasemeyer, please email me and tell me which way to go on this because I'm a bit confused (what else is new?). It's the only section that's keeping me from voting yes on this thing. Truman, what do you think? cya, Howard (I used to have a mind of my own before I joined AERC. lol) ----- Original Message ----- From: John Teeter Sent: Tuesday, October 08, 2002 1:50 PM To: ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: [RC] Proposed Bylaws - Removing Family Membership &Citizenship require... Sounds like a bit of knee jerk reaction going on here (well, admittedly the reflexes are a bit slow if it takes 6 months for the knee to jerk...)
but, you all should read a bit more closely. The definition of "Family Membership" is going away in the by laws, but the concept of family membership and the actuality of family membership isn't (necessarily) going away. Basically the wording of the new bylaws makes it a board action to define membership and dues stuff rather than a bylaws (vote of the membership) action. So it's really untrue that family membership is going away. it makes too much sense. Under the new bylaws, the board can decide to have family membership, or "everyone living within 10 miles of oreana" group membership. or whatever makes sense for the future stability and growth of the organization.
Hope your foot doesn't hurt too much when it hits the bit old rock in the trail following the next knee jerk reaction:)

==== from the online explaination
This area no longer shows the family membership. The existing bylaws defines family membership for voting purposes as having two votes. Under the new bylaws all family members 18 or older will be allowed to vote. Both existing and proposed bylaws allow the board to establish the dues structure so there need be no change in dues with the passage of the new bylaws unless the board decides to change for some other reason. Family membership as originally designed was a father and/or mother with all supported children living at one address or at college, receiving one Endurance News and two adult membership votes. Under the proposed bylaws - all family member adults will be allowed to vote. For example, a father, mother and two daughters (both 18 or older and supported) still at one address or at college receiving one Endurance News would now have four votes. The words family membership may not be in the proposed bylaws but everything is in order for the board to continue the family membership dues structure. Section 5.05 provides for the board to determine dues structure and which allows for the family membership dues structure to continue.
