[RC] sick horses - Mary Maynard
My mare did her 1st 100 mile ride at VC100 in NV and 10 days later is now
ill. She has had a fever and cough and runny nose. I vaccinated all my herd
and used internasel flu. I believe that horses that were infected from the
Sierra valley ride showed up at VC100 ( it is true there can be no symptoms
and a horse can be a carrier with out becoming ill ). I have heard of four
horses that are now sick. There is a good probablity there will be more. And
of course my herd is still pending illness (right now they are in the
incubaton period). The rest of my ride season and all my goals for the
season are down the drain, and I have perhaps months of care taking sick
horses. Next year I will do things a bit differntly. I will revaccinate
midsummer and isolate all horses from my big herd after a ride for at least
two weeks. Many people don't have this option to separate.I say PLEASE leave
your sick horses at home -and if you have any doubts stay home.. your
actions affect many others.
I also want to mention that the VC100 is a wonderful ride and a great ride
for the 1st timer 100 mile horse. It is very well organised and the terrain
is rocky but the views are splendid.
