For some it is the material. Last time my girlfriend used a neoprene girth
her horse, actually I rode him and used my saddle. She knew he was allergic,
but didn't think to tell me or look at my cinch. We rode for an hour and
when we got back he had swellings that were huge. The next day he was
swollen all over his front end, required lots of drugs and all his skin in
the girth area and his front legs sloughed off. It was horrible.
Some horses are VERY allergic to neoprene. Just like some humans are really
sensitive to latex, some can die from exposure to it and we have to be
really careful to check for that in the hospital.
