[RC] [Guest] NC 100 rider's perspective - Ridecamp Moderator

Mary Kornwolf vgea@xxxxxxxxx Hi everyone from Mary in Richmond -

Just made it safely home from KY after getting pulled early on in the 100 - oh well, that's 1 less day of work I need to miss :)

At the vet-in on Tues, the vets had some concerns about Shiloh's left hind, but after I trotted around more to loosen him up they agreed it looking much better and let me start - the two riders who didn't get to start had come all the way from Canada and Colorado, a real bummer

Even at 6:30am ride day it was hot - I was crewless but ended up getting wonderful help from my OD friends Susan Brehm and Dana Lock who were there to to work the ride but didn't have duties as yet since some vet tech students were assisting the vets the first part of the day.

I was philosophical when our day ended mercifully early at the 2nd hold. Shiloh felt fine on trail but the trot out reveal a small but consistent LF lameness. Shortly afterwards, while I was getting some shoeing assistance, we noticed a small cut on his left front cannon that started swelling considerably and may have been a contributing factor. Don't have any idea how it happended - maybe a rock located at the top of one of those trial gullies somehow hit it just the right way.

Ride management took gearout for us crewless riders, but since silly me put me gear for the 3rd and 4th VC in the wrong truck, it never left camp. That would have been a nasty discovery had I made it to the 3rd check and found no supplies!

I had time to get Shiloh iced up and back to camp before heading out to watch & help at the next check, where so many other riders' days came to an end. With temps at nearly 90 degrees most no breeze and humidity/rain showers to rival a day in mid-July, it was BRUTAL out there.

Ride management did fantastic job organizing this event. Since I've done the OD, the trail didn't seem too intimidating, but the finish times tell the tale - they were OD worthy!

Congratulations to everyone who finished - what a triumph over the elements...hopefully it'll be cooler for the 50s
