I am still sold on oil. Cheaper than rice bran or
any of those other fat based supplements. I make sure though to add plenty
of vitamin E in the diet. Helps metabolize the fat. Something like
that. Susan G. has good information on her site about feeding fat vs. rice
bran.
My vitamin E supp also has plenty of selenium in it and I
feed the best grass hay I can find, sometimes with a little alfalfa in it.
My grain is a corn, oats and oat pellet mix (elevator didn't have barley and so
we substituted the oat pellet) plus it has beet pulp and alfalfa pellets in
it. NO molasses. I have oil mixed in it instead. Horses love
it. I buy a cherry flavored oil and Malik gets 1-2 cups a day
when he's working hard and I have even fed up to 3 cups for short periods
of time if he needed some extra calories. That's when I'm able to be home
and give him several small meals a day.
My best advice is to seek Susan's advice... her articles
are excellent. I have won several BCs on 25 LD rides and recently won our
first 50 mile BC award...I give a lot of that credit to following her advice in
her articles. OH, and I have a talented horse to boot. :)
