[RC] rice bran and weight - Tim Worden
Tracy,
Getting weight on a horse has been a recent interest
of mine. It's interesting to hear different
approaches to packing the lbs. back on a horse. With
the drought here in the SE our horses started to get
rather underweight. A few months ago we switched from
pellets to a grain sweet feed, plus increased the
amount per day. This has helped tremendously. Some
other things which seems to help is a quarter cup of
cider vinegar in the feed. My buddy Tom told me about
this and I'll be darned if it didn't help. Most
recently we've been trying bread. Our horses
absolutely love bread. We go to the Merita wholesale
store and get about 30 loaves of "day old bread" for
about $2.50. Most of the bread was not even a day
old. They could not put the loaves on the shelves
because the bags had a hole. What's funny though is
some of our horses can be somewhat picky. Our Quarab,
Poco, will ONLY eat wheat, a couple refuse to eat the
heel, and my mare hoovers anything you pull out of the
bag. We try to give each of them a loaf a day or a few
loaves throughout the week. The bread freezes well
also and thaws rather fast so it keeps longer.
Luckily it has actually rained for a few days last
week so they have some nice green grass to munch on.
We need more rain though to get through this drought.
Anyway, if you're unsure about the rice bran, perhaps
try bread:)
Tim
(wondering when Liberty Run results will get posted)
