I think this is a sign of immaturity in the sport. We had the same problem
in AERC 20 years ago, and have pretty well worked through it. I don't know
what the history is in Australia, but they likewise have a longer history
with the sport as a large, organized entity than does Europe (yes, I know
Europe has had events for a long time, but not at the level of overall
organization as the Americans and the Aussies), and they seem to have good
working relationships between RM's, riders, and veterinarians. We need to
continue to persist by example, and I'd say the outcome in Jerez is a lever
in the door to help to promote more veterinary involvement. If we can use
the horses' deaths to achieve better future safety, perhaps the horses need
not have died in vain.
