[RC] pregnant and riding - Larry Miller
The first time I met Laura, she was pregnant and riding the Frantic 50. She
did an excellent job, took good care of her horse and herself. I rode too
until 10 days before delivery. The whole neighborhood was in an uproar, my
OB quit asking if I was riding, he simply didn't want to know. My doctor
husband kept quizzing me so much about where I was going and how did I feel,
that I finally quit riding to give him some comfort! I had ridden ever
since I was a younster, my doctor told me to keep doing whatever activities
I was used to doing. My labor was 2 hrs and I gave birth to a bouncing baby
boy. He is now 32 and works for the federal forest in Bend, OR. The horse
I rode was not a mean horse, he was steady, and his only problem was he
liked to run. I have no problems at all with folks riding when pregnant as
long as it is something they are used to doing. One certainly wouldn't want
the discipline of riding to be introduced to a pregnant lady who has never
ridden before. One does what one is comfortable doing. One respects other's
feelings and doesn't try to force one's own personal beliefs on someone
else. It is an individual decision that needs to be made by each person as
each person knows his/hers abillities and the horse in question. Jeanie PS
I even skied when pregnant which turned out to be more dangerous than riding
my horse. I had to deal with all those fools on the slopes.
