[RC] Re:RC Virginia City 100 - Judy Houle
I just got back from the VC 100 and have partial
results:
1. Tom Johnston SA Proud Endeavor - BC
2. Steve Hoeft MWF Euklides
3. Pascale Soumay Milarepa
4. Jazon Wonders Ghandi
5. Judy Reens Benjih
6. Michelle Shaw PR Tallymark
Sorry I don't know more, maybe someone else will post.
High points of the ride:
Tommy Lewis finishing with his FIVE YEAR OLD son,
Cliffie, who was riding Tommy's 29 YEAR OLD HORSE,
Spiderman, the horse Tommy won junior national
champion on, like, 15 years ago. What also makes this
significant is that Tommy accomlished this feat as a
five year old with HIS dad, Cliff the first, back in
1977. I heard that Cliffie spent the hour holds
playing in the dirt and running around with his
friends until Tommy grabbed him and stuck him back on
the horse when it was time to go. Amazing.
Highest completion rate ever: 61 started, 43 finished.
Very nice weather, breezes blowing all day, not the
usual blistering heat. Very dry and rockier than ever
up Bailey Canyon, though. Plenty of water on the
trail, great management, volunteer help, well marked.
They finally opened up the old Railroad Depot building
for our use. Great old bar inside, cheap drinks,
coffee and bloody marys in the morning. Great place
for the calcutta auction. (where they auction off each
rider to finish in the top three in their division and
the money goes into a pot and pays out a percentage to
each bettor - this is Nevada, remember) The bidding
slowed down when we got to the heavyweights, so they
gave out drinks on the house if everyone promised to
stay and bid. The big bidders and winners tended to
be non-riders, so there was fun for all.
The high point for me was getting back to camp at 51
miles just out of the top ten, but it was
short-lived, as my horse had developed a swollen knee
from a fall on some rocks in the first 25 miles, and
was off. I didn't think the abrasion was much, as he
passed the 25 mile check, and went like gangbusters
over the SOB's (some really bad rollercoaster rocky
hills about 40 miles out) but these things sometimes
take awhile to develop. I don't know if icing and
arnica gel would have helped enough had I done it at
the check. My horse is a "daisy clipper" and has a
tendency to trip. He's been adjusted and massaged,
which helped when the tripping got bad, but that's
just the way he goes. I'm almost considering knee
pads for him! Maybe lighter shoes like Equithotics
would help. Any opinions would be appreciated. He's
doing better after lots of arnica, ice, Sore No More
and epson salt poultice. I look at pulls as "positive
learning opportunities", because "experience is what
you get when you didn't get what you wanted". I'm
starting to sound really California. Better sign off!
Happy Trails!
