[RC] REACTION TO VACCINE? - Joan Dowis
Ok, guys, here's a question for you:
31 y/o horse in excellent health, 1st West Nile vaccine and nasal strangles
vaccine given last Wed. Friday, feeling "peevish." This a.m. (Sat.),
copious amounts of clear/whitish nasal drainage, mostly from left nostril,
plus frequent coughing up drool, absolutely no interest in food, no temp.,
movable golf ball sized lump behind right jawbone, obviously depressed. Vet
(over phone) thinks it may be bee sting, he's in surgery and can't come out,
says to see how horse is this evening. At 4 p.m., no change except temp.
104, appears to have consumed 3 gal. of water. Vet (over phone) says to
give a shot of banamine. One hour later, feels obviously better, shows
interest in some crumbly hay floor droppings, dampened (no difficult
chewing), but still copious amounts of nasal drainage and coughing up drool.
Vet thinks now maybe reaction to vaccine. Will check with vet first thing
in a.m. and make the trip to town for more banamine. With the coughing up
drool, can't give bute orally. Can't get lab work done on weekend.
I'm in No. Cal., no West Nile here yet, and no exposure to outside horses.
Other three horses feeling normal after same vaccines.
Any ideas?
Joan Dowis
