My Journeyman farrier says barefoot always gives more traction.I'm sure it also depends on the quality and hardness of hoof , and how much they wear off when riding. Also the terrrain. Hard rocks etc will wear more hoof off. A spongy wooded trails, less. I believe sand wears some too. I shoe front only as we have graveland rock roads and spongy trails. My horse has very hard hoof and a nice cup. But later he may need all the way around if he wears down in back . My mare will probably need shoes all the way around, she has flatter foot land not as hard a hoof. I think you may be able to experiment. I'm hoping for opinions, please, on how you may feel your horses' traction is affected with no pads, pads added, or barefoot... have a friend who is having the hind shoes pulled today and may have fronts pulled, too, next time. She rides in varied terrain with a fair amount of hills and lava rock, mostly conditioning rides, limited speed. Thanks in advance for your help! Nikki
