You are going to get many different bits (hehe) of advice on this topic so I
thought I would add to the mix.

I am very familiar with horses that fight the bit. I guess I'm just lucky
that way. :-) I have tried everything and what finally worked for me with
every horse, surprisingly, is a hack. I have found that the horse that hates
the bit actually appreciates the hackamore (did I spell that correctly?).
The horses literally go through a transformation from "I hate this thing you
are tugging on" to "Wow, where should we go now?" Most of the time, the hack
works with no additional tack required however, with my current baby boy, I
also am using a German martingale. He has a tendency to walk proud and I was
tired of having his ears tickle my nose! The martingale allows the freedom
with his head however trains him to tuck when moving out or stopping. The
hack I am now using is the "S" Hack (thank you, Tammy)! You can get both of
these items at a very reasonable cost. If you are interested let me know and
I will get you the number to someone that can ship them out to you.

     Hope this helps!!

PS Not to mention how convenient hacks are for endurance riding! Drinking,
    eating, etc.
