Hi
We have our first case of WNV.
Within an hour after the first visible symptoms we
had a vet here treating our 25 year old. He thinks she has a good
chance considering her condition. she is fat, shiny and her immune system
has never been compromised. The person I ride with had a 9yr trotter
vaccinated last spring for WNV who died. But his immune system had been
compromised last fall when he had a reaction to a sedation while he
had his teeth floated.
The day before this, we received a notice from a
vet we have used from time to time. stating they had been at various
continuing education meetings and it has been suggested that horses vaccinated
with initial 2-dose series of WNV vaccine are considered protected for
approximately four months. It is therefore recommended by this vets
practice that horses vaccinated in Jan. - June 2002 be given a 3rd
injection yet this year to be protected throughout the remainder of the mosquito
season. Pending further research, the vaccination protocol for WNV maybe
to inoculate in the spring and mid-summer, rather than the traditional single
spring booster.
going back to the barn to be with her. I
watched her come into this world I just hope I won't be watching her leave this
world in the next couple of weeks.
