How would you ride steep downhills if you had no stirrups? I agree with Susan. Tuck the rear end and lean back. It's how I learned bareback. There've gotta be some similarities between bareback and saddle riding. :)
If you are comfortable with your stirrups on the flat and the uphills, you probably would be happier trying to change your riding position on the downhills than changing your stirrups and then having problems on the flat and the uphills.
JMO, of course. I have only 50 miles (LDs at that) in actual "competition." (Competition in quotes because I was just competing against myself.) But I do ride alot. And will at least double my miles in January at Gator Run if fate leaves me be!
