[RC] RE: [RC] Seeing horses in trailer ?was: trailer preferences - AprJhn
Right now my husband and I own a 2 horse bumper pull stock trailer. When I drive, I am constantly checking on my horses. I am fortunate to be able to see them right through the large front windows (no glass, just the space there). I mostly check them out through the rear view mirror, but can also see them through the side mirrors (advantage of stock sides, you can see through them).
I adjust my driving to their comfort level. I've learned tons about how to drive by being able to see if they are scrambling or just hanging out. I got a really nice compliment from a friend that followed me to and from a training ride. She said my horse just stood there. No scrambling. Not even much movement. Just standing. This was not an accident or a fluke. I work on that.
We probably won't have a stock trailer forever though, and if we get a gooseneck, there goes the direct sight-line to my horses. But my husband and I have talked about that, too. We want to be able to see. So we have agreed that when we come to that point, we will buy a camera/monitor set and put the little monitor in the cab of the truck (runs off the cig lighter) and put the camera in the trailer to be able to see the horses. We've seen them for about $100. Lighting might be an issue, but I'm confident we can work that out, too.
We figure if we can afford a $10,000 trailer (for cash...no more debt for us), we can afford a monitoring system for $100.
