This is probably the very best thing you can do!  I helped mark trail for my 
first ride and both my horse and I gained invaluable knowledge during those 
marking rides.  I wish I had gotten into the sport farther in advance of my 
first ride and volunteered at a ride or two - because you are right - the 
step by step "what do I do next" questions are seemingly never ending the 
first time out.  So I strongly urge you to get involved NOW - I have found 
that most of the folks involved are more than willing to share their 
knowledge - and talking about the ride while out marking the trail is a great 
combination of fun, learning, and exercise!
