Re: [RC] Riverdance trail marking - Laurie Durgin

It's southren cousin is called Kudzu.Swallers whole buildings, trees, cars. Never, never buy propetrty in the south if it has it!! National park service had us trailcrewers try to dig it up one summer. Roots go 8 ft. then branch into 3's, then go 8 ft. then branch into 3's, then   go . .. We mutineed. . . Grows a foot a day. Exfoliates only control it a few feet. But good news is if you surround it with goats, they will eventually eat it to death, like 3 years.
Rascal loves bamboo shoots, they grow by the creek crossing. Maybe if they surround this stuff in California with  arabs (the horses not the people) for 3 years they would erradicate it. Food for thought.     . . . Laurie and Rascal

I'll bet that this is the same stuff that we have growing along all the
irrigation canals here. Ship in a couple of million poor Egyptian farmers
with goats, sheep, donkeys and water buffalo to feed and they will keep it
under control! It'll make the countryside more interesting to ride through
    too. <G>

    Hi Scott,

That "bamboo looking" plant is Giant Reed Grass (Arundo donax), which is a
really noxious, invasive exotic.  There are a myriad of problems, from
displacing native habitats, increased fire danger, and decreased wildlife
values.  Don't know about So Cal., but in Northern Calif, there are growing
efforts, with state money behind, to try to eradicate this stuff. As I ride
the county, I note locations and stands of it, as the county is mapping with
intent to eradicate.  At least up here, there is a chance we can eliminate
it before it takes over all our watersheds.....
    Karen
