[RC] Lime marking on the ground works - Jeff Brickson
Lately when we go to mark for a new ride on the Blue Mountain in SE PA, we
find just enough of the old lime on the ground to follow it on foot. It is
staying there for a few months!
We're not allowed to use ribbons or signs of any kind, only the lime,
because it'll eventually wash away. We use colored chalk from the building
contractor stores to mark the turns, red for one loop and blue for the other
loop, as arrows on top of thicker white lime arrows. Mileage-to-go markers
are large numbers written in lime on the ground.
Put the lime markings on high ground or on logs or rocks on the trail, not
in the tire tracks, thickly, and it lasts longer. A dark tree trunk is a
good place for it, too. GEt the hydrated kind, which is WHITEST. The
granular is too grey, so blends in with gravel & dirt. A few days before
marking, get/make a large-holed funnel and fill large-necked detergent and
cat litter containers with lime. The handles make the lime easier to carry
around.
Only once did someone get lost on our lime-marked rides; she was quitting
early and deliberately went off the trail. Ok, she was only slightly lost.
October 20 is our 25 mile CTR so come on out and enjoy what may be the last
big beautiful Blue Mountain ride in SE PA (The new State Game Land
regulations go into effect in February). E-mail me for info sheet and entry
form. Bring your friends!

Terre said,
I've approached a given tree branch, to find the stub of last year's ribbon
still on it.
