Re: [RC] Leasing - Bette Lamore

Hi Melanie
Just thought I'd give you perspective from a lessor's vantage point. If
someone asked me to lease one of mine for the purpose of endurance,
frankly, I would not even consider it. The risks are too high--- even
for great horse veterans such as Becky Hart, Judith Orvus, or Val
Kanavy. Because of the nature of the sport, the likelihood of injury is
high--- let's face it, caca happens on the trail no matter how
experienced the rider. The same would be true for jumpers in the
showring/cross country, or race horses on the flat track. So much
depends on the skill of the rider and trainer and just plain dumb luck!
I just leased a mare out this year for breeding and just lost her--- in
fact, she is one of my all-time best broodmares and the mother of
Riverdance, not to mention a really great friend. There is ALWAYS risk
in leasing --- and I leased her to a woman in her last year of vet
school. Thought I had all my bases covered and that it was a safe
proposition. There is ALWAYS that risk of loss and the colic after
foaling was no fault of the lessee; however, I found out too late that
she was denied insurance on my 16 year old mare for surgical/medical due
to her age and couldn't pay for colic surgery. I was out for the evening
and by the time I heard about it (11PM west coast time and she was on
the east coast--- one of those exceedingly rare times when Mark and I
went out--- movie and a show) it was too late and the clinic had put my
mare down. Would it have happened it she were at home? No. Did I have
all my bases covered--- I thought so but I did not check for insurance
renewal--- in July! It happened in August. I thought I had done
everything right and I still lost my mare.
If you feel breeders charge too much for their leases, perhaps you will
remember my experience. My other leases have always had my mares remain
at home throughout their pregnancy except for this time and only one
other time. I will not let a mare leave my premises from now on under
lease. Then I will not be plagued by "would'ves. could'ves, should'ves."
IF you can even GET a lease to do endurance on a horse, consider
yourself lucky. I would expect anyone leasing a horse to carry full
medical, surgical AND mortality for the price of the horse. Can run as
little as $350 dollars unless the horse is over a certain age--- then it
is a lot more expensive and sometimes full medical is not even available
at that point.
Lots of things to consider here.
Good luck!

I am wondering how much should I expect to pay for leasing a horse? I will be
keeping it on my property and providing full insurance. I don't want to buy
this horse outright until I see he is suitable for the sport (Icelandics are
a large investment!)
