Re: [RC] Sheath? What sheath? - Tara Wheeler
Hey Laura,
Thanks for getting this thread started again once it started to die out! :)
And to Karla,
Quite a lot of people have their vets clean their horse's sheaths when they
get their horse's teeth floated. The horse is usually sedated for the
floating and they usually drop when sedated, so it's a great time to do it,
especially if your horse is a little bothered by the procedure.
So, I'd say at least once a year, possibly twice. Your mileage may vary.
My trainer started guilt tripping me about cleaning Hal's sheath as you
could see how nasty and crusty looking it had gotten whenever Hal dropped
for a pee. (she claimed she could smell him, but I really think she was
bluffing)
I'm just not willing to pay my vet to do the fairly easy stuff (and it's
fairly easy if you've got a horse who doesn't mind you mucking about down
there) like sheath cleaning and a few shots (I've done two rounds of West
Nile virus myself and saved at least $50).
I'll happily pay for the shoeing, the yearly rabies shot, the health
certificate and I pay a separate specialist to float my boy's teeth.
But I'll take the old socks, the Excalibur and the hot water out myself. :)
(and ditto on the old socks idea! Just brilliant!)
