Re: [RC] Missing shoe - Maggie Mieske
Never remove the other shoe. At least not without asking your farrier. Or
unless you know what you're doing. It won't hurt your horse to go without
one shoe. We see horses barefoot that are more screwed up than your horse
might be from one shoe on and one off. Do your best to ride on the side and
where you will do the least amount of damage. Of course, CALL your farrier
and let him know. So many times people won't call because they don't want
to "bother" Nelson and it will never fail that when they finally DO call,
Nelson was just there (at the barn or in the vicinity) THAT same day or the
previous day or two and could have taken care of it right away. If you have
a reset coming up soon, it wouldn't be so bad to take the other shoe off.
But if it was done recently, the farrier would have to basically reshoe both
the feet if you take it off. Nelson will usually put on a lost shoe free
(if it was done just recently) or for the cost of the shoe and maybe a small
fuel surcharge. But if he has to reshoe the horse because both shoes are
off, he charges the regular rate. Something to think about. Good luck and
have a good ride!
Maggie
