Re: [RC] New ride volunteer - DESERTRYDR1
Charles, I have to agree with Merryben and Angie. Just show up, and someone
will be glad to put you to work. I had done some LD rides, but never crewed,
so there was a ride close to home that my horse wasn't ready for, I just
showed up, went to the ride meeting, then stood around in the crew area at
the vet check the next day. I helped some of the team crews, but also stood
at the water tank when rides would come in, and ask if I could sponge their
horse, or did they need it held to go do something. I stood and held horses
and handfed them beetpulp or gruel or whatever the owner had. I found out
that a lot of horses that don't seem too interested in food will eat it if
you hold it in front of their noses. I also helped a couple of riders that
had to pull, and just in general tried to make myself useful. I still have a
person or two who remembers me from crewing that ride. Lots of people who
didn't have a crew were thrilled with any help. I trotted horses out for vet
checks, hauled water for a gal who had come off her horse, and all in all had
a WONDERFUL time at that ride. Almost better than getting to ride it myself.
And I learned a LOT. I watched how much water the more experienced riders
were putting on their horses, and what they were feeding at vet checks, all
sorts of stuff. Just go. jeri
