Ridecamp: Fw: [RC] Swelling and pain at vet checks?

How do they judge pain? My horse has not had lameness problems except related to a infected hoof. He had a five hour trailer ride and came off a 2 on the lameness grade. They asked if he had just gotten off the trailer. The next day and even later that night he didn't appear lame at all even on pavement. On ride day at the end the vet flexed his hoof and marked him down for pain (different leg). How do they tell that. Is it filling in the leg while it is flexed? The horse didn't look in any pain or pull away. He wasn't lame either anymore. He is fifteen and he was conditioned and not overridden. He hates shipping boots and so next time I was going to use tracks and quilts and see if he would tolerate those. I am a newbie to distance and need any advice of things I can do better next time. At home, his lame leg is tight but the opposite one has some filling still and some big veins. That was two days after the ride. I used a poultice after the trailer ride home and linament the second day with just turnout and rest. Thanks, Colleen
