RE: [RC] Algae in water tanks - Snodgrass, Bonnie
Good question. While I was searching for info about algae prevention I found
a lot of info about a blue/green algae that can grow in stock tanks and
produce toxins. I've seen the type of algae described in these posts growing
in the big stock tanks used on ranches. This stuff will grow into big
flaoting masses that will cover the top of tanks. typically copper sulfate
is used to prevent this algae from growing. The toxins that may or may not
be produced are harmful to livestock. I may have to try a few of the really
large snails in one tank, and try just emptying it about 95% each time,
leaving a little of the old water in the bottom for the snails and forgoing
the scrubbing to see what happens.

Something my husband brought up (and actually it is a pretty good
question) while I was cleaning the algae from the tanks---"Why do you
buy supplements with algae in them and then clean it out of the tanks?
Wouldn't it simply be easier and cheaper to just leave the algae in there?"
Is the algae commonly found in water tanks "bad" algae???
