I think the rubber tire makes a difference. I knew someone in a regular running shoe who had his foot backed over quickly by a car and he was just fine.---No I wasn't driving--- :-)
But a foot on a 1000 lb creature shod in steel stepping on your foot? Maybe even stamping down on your foot with x lbs per sq inch?? Nope. I wouldn't wear steel toes in my boots. Seems to me it could even amputate your toe.
