We had a horse that would pull back, break halters, break leadropes, land
on his head, etc. Finally had a professional trainer come here to
work with the horse. He did the John Lyons, or whoever, thing of
putting a rope around the horse's barrel, ran rope around a stout pipe
and back to the horse's halter. This was done in the horse's
stall. He then walked passed the stall and slapped his leg with an
empty feed bag to startle the horse a little. Horse set back, as
was expected. When he felt the rope tighten around his barrel, he
stepped forward again. Horse did not want to set back after
that. We've rigged this system up a few times a week and horse has
never offered to set back again. I'd highly recommend having a
professional work with this horse and show you how to do it so that the
horse will not set back again.
