[RC] when a horse trips - Debby Stai

I use to ride an older percheron/tb cross who stumbled alot and I mean
alot, it was a combination of age and hard work and laziness, though
when they are rushing back to the barn seems when he'd trip the most. I
rode english, contact, and I know I kept him from hitting his nose on
the ground numerous times as he had that contact to help him, seems it
gave him a chance to get his back feet underhim, it was definetly a
balance issue. When I ride my youngster, I tend to ride with alot less
contact, still contact, but I want him to carry himself and he needs to
learn that so he doesn't lean on the bit or on me. But the contact is
there if he needs it or if I need it. I think alot has to do with the
way you normally ride to begin with. I don't know that I agree that
they need to let their heads drop so they can get their back feet under
them. With all that weight on their front end? Kind of reminds me of a
    teeter totter. Debby
