[RC] when a horse trips... - Carolyn Burgess
<<<what is the best thing to do? Support them with the reins or give away
the reins?>>>
Pamela:
Your going to get all different answers on this one. It also depends on the
reason for the trip. In most cases, you want to allow them enough room in
the reins to catch themselves if they can, but not enough so that if they
need help you can't balance them. You also have to change your seat when
they trip too, to put yourself behind their center of balance to help them
beable to catch themselves.
I have two trippers, both Standardbreds. One trips because of lameness
issues. She would usually catch herself, but I always sat back when she
tripped and would be right there to catch her if she needed it. My other
tripper is new to under saddle work. He doesn't know yet, how to balance
the two of us. He also is still in the mindset that he is on a perfectly
groomed, flat sand track, he doesn't pick his feet up and has been know to
trip on uneven ground. He is the kind of tripper that can get you killed
because he can slam you on the ground or roll over on you. When he trips, I
always catch him. I have actually pulled him up off of his knees and his
face.
