[RC] Fire Rehab for Pasture & Forest - Lynne Tomovick
Our 20 acres of land in the Black Hills of South Dakota recently burned in
the Battle Creek Fire. We are trying to look at the positive side and
looking for pasture & forest rehab ideas.
In addition to Forest Service & Extension resources, does anyone have
additional tidbits and resource information on "how to" rehabilitate a
forest that has been burned and use it as pasture? Our land is somewhat
hilly with pine trees, so do you strip the forest floor, clear out all the
trees, including slash and start from scratch? Or, do you let some of the
trees rot to create mulch and is this better in the long run? We want it to
be aesthetically pleasing, but also want a healthy & rich land. What about
nutrient & mineral depletion or gain? I'd like to keep some trees, make
more pasture and also keep some little critter & bird habitat if possible.
