Re: [RC] Helmets and risk tolerance - amber applegate

As we speak, the news is doing a story on ATV's and Children, helmets not
being the issue but rather age being the issue.
Perhaps, now this is a long shot, but could it be that John Ware's time was
up?? One of the Coroners that my son works with just died at age 38 in
Switzerland basejumping. He was a seasoned jumper, 500 jumps to his credit.
He was not wearing a helmet, his choice. He hit the wall. My son examined
the body and found that he died from a broken neck. Helmet would not have
saved him. His time was up.Having sat in on some posts with this Doctor two
weeks before he died, I feel confident to say this was how he felt about
life and death as well. In fact he and I spoke about the risks of
basejumping after two of his mates just died jumping. He said their time was
up.
And this is my unhumble opinion. It is free choice or in MY opinion should
be free choice for ADULTS capable of making their own decisions in life to
wear or not to wear helmets. I get so sick of everyone and the government
sticking their nose in just about everything we do in life.
Please don't give me the tired argument that if we don't impose all these
laws then the State will end up supporting the Veggies because of their
choice. I voted for the right to die law in Oregon. It was the last time I
voted. As usual, what the people wanted is now years later tied up in the
courts because some JERKS won't honor what the voters put into place.
My sons have strict orders to "do me in" if I ever become a veg-head. I do
wear a helmet, but sometimes, albeit rarely, I will go for a short ride
across the fields sans helmet. That is my choice, I want it to be my choice.
And if people want to jump on a horse with no riding experience, that is
their choice, just don't participate in a group outting where your limited
abilities will harm others. Freedom of choice, Didn't our forefathers have
something to say about that?
Otay, let the flames rise.
