West Nile virus hits Colorado
By The Associated Press
August 15, 2002
LITTLETON - State health officials confirmed
Wednesday that West Nile virus has been found in northern Colorado, but said
further tests were being
conducted by federal scientists.
One chicken and two horses in Weld County
tested positive for the mosquito-borne virus, said Jane Norton, executive
director of the state Department of
Public Health and Environment.
"We knew it was just a matter of days before
we'd see it in Colorado, and it's here," she said. "We've been on the watch.
It's been traveling west." A dead crow found
in Weld County also may have had the virus, she said.
Further tests were being conducted at the
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, she said.
No cases involving humans have been reported
in Colorado, Norton said.
Seven people in Louisiana and two in
Mississippi have died from West Nile virus this year, and the CDC has said 145
people have been infected in six
states and the District of Columbia.
The virus had been found in a total of
37 states before the cases in Colorado. Heather
