In the good old days, when us kids did most of our
riding bareback, we found that on long mountain rides with lots of ups and
downs, the horses would get sore from the constant rubbing of the hair
backward and forward under the "seat" area. Some times even lost a
little hair.
Horse sweat and jeans made for some sore kid butts
too.
We took to using a saddle blanket (way before
bareback pads) but usually more trouble than they were worth.
In the end, just took the time to saddle up if we
were going to the hills for the day.
