I, too, learned to ride bareback as a small child. I
don't ride bareback too often anymore but may do so
just to keep my skills up.
I let a young man ride my horse bareback (this has
been 15+ years ago) and my horse had a sore back
later. Now...I can't say for sure what sored his back
but I thought at the time it was due to being ridden
bareback. Has anyone else had this happen?
Speaking of balance...I've gained a LOT of balance
since doing a lot of riding sidesaddle. You've got to
maintain balance aside. One of the most amazing
things I've ever seen was a junior girl showing her
Arab aside. I don't remember which class but all
riders, astride or aside, had to also show bareback in
the style they were riding!! This girl walked,
trotted, cantered, sidepassed, sliding stop, & spin
bareback aside!! It was amazing! Don't ask me how
she did it but she made it look easy.
