I always found that the easiest way to learn to canter bareback, or teach
someone to do so, is to canter on a straightaway, up a slight hill.....
One time (I will remember it always, though), I got to borrow my friends
buckskin mare. Who knows what breed or cross she was, just that she had a
wonderful, smooth canter and a really comfortable back. We did a trail that
twisted and turned, while climbing...almost like a roller coaster. I just
leaned back, relaxed and cantered her up that trail. It was just a blast!
