Monte says the starters for the 454 requires spacers between the starter & 
the engine. (They give it the proper teeth depth in to the flywheel.) 
Without these you won't be able to keep a starter in it.
They came with the original engine, not with the starters. Sometimes they 
get "eaten up" by a loose starter mounting, or sometimes they get thrown 
away if the mechanic doesn't know what they're doing.
