Well, Howard old pal, in many areas, RM's will not turn
away your entry if for some reason you have to check in on the morning of the
ride.  Most want to know in advance that that is when you're coming in, so
that they can accommodate the latecomers ok, and in practical reality, there's a
limit to how many riders can do that, and still get the ride started on
time.  Especially with LD riders (who more often than not start later than
the longer distances anyway), a great many of them are often local, and are
often just getting into the sport, hence a) don't have far to haul, and b) may
not be as well set up to camp overnight as those more experienced.  Yep,
they are accommodated in this way in a great many areas, by a great many RM's,
who are willing to help any way they can, and who also understand that it isn't
in anyone's best interest to turn away a) money, and b) new faces to the
sport.

In answer to the original question (which I apparently
missed)--if the haul is a short one, it won't hurt the horse a bit to haul over
just before the ride.  Just check with the RM to make sure that is ok with
that individual RM (not all will let you do it), and if at all possible, try to
go to the briefing the night before (since you live close, that shouldn't be a
problem).  If you can't do that, make sure you discuss with the RM what you
should have learned at the briefing.

My question to you is where on earth do you ride?  Every ride I go
to check in is the day before the ride.
