It's very common in show dogs (bitches) who are campaigned heavily to never
whelp a litter. They either never conceive or have problems with puppies
being born dead, deformed, etc. Usually the owners wait til the bitch is
done with her show career to breed her and she's too old. Kind of like
what's happening to women who want a career first, then try and conceive in
their late 30's and early 40's. There is a lot of problems with them getting
pregnant without a lot of help from fertility experts.
